Georgia Free Park Day
Saturday September 26, 2009 will be day to celebrate freedom in Georgia. Freedom in terms of free admission to all of Georgia's state parks and historic sites. All parking fees and entrance fees will be waived. Fishing access is also free on this day, no fishing license is required to fish in waters within public park boundaries. The state is setting up this fee free day as a way of thanking all the visitors and volunteers that support the mission of the parks and historic sites. It is being held in conjunction with http://publiclandjournal.com/blog/volunteer-your-public-lands ">National Public Lands Day.
There will be many volunteer opportunities and family oriented events that will be part of the celebration. These include:
- Unicoi State Park – learn to canoe or skeet shoot
- Hamburg State Park – listen for owls on a guided night hike
- Stephen C. Foster State Park – fish in the Okefenokee Swamp
- >Red Top Mountain State Park – molten iron works demonstration
The Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites is helping to coordinate some of the volunteer activities. There are also a few businesses stepping up to help out. REI will be helping with a celebration at Panola Mountain State Park and Home Depot employees will be volunteering at Reed Bingham State Park.
